“I have had the pleasure of working with Craig as a student in the Doctor of Strategic Leadership program in the School of Business and Leadership at Regent University. I find Craig to be an intense and thoughtful student of leadership theory. He is one of those rare students who works diligently to seek deeper understanding of theoretical concepts and their practical application to bring about transformation of people and solving organizational problems.”

Barry Doublestein

Adjunct Professor, Regent University School of Business and Leadership

“Craig Bailie is a critical thinker, strategist and thought leader in several fields including public leadership, governance and nation building. He will help you and your organisation find solutions that address root causes. He thinks outside the box and is a true servant leader.”

Gareth Stead

Director, Africa School of Governance

“Craig Bailie is an excellent political analyst with a great understanding of political systems and realities. He is hard-working, reliable, and a smart thinker. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is proud to count him to the group of alumni of the Foundation’s Parliamentary Research Programme.”

Henning Suhr

Former Resident Representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in South Africa

“Craig has a deep passion for human-centric governance and is willing to challenge the status quo and drive positive change in a constructive manner.”

David Livingston

Managing Partner, McChrystal Academy

“It was during his attendance of HEAT at the KAIPTC in 2021 that I got to know Craig Bailie as the only southern African member of the training cohort. Craig showed incredible interest and brought his critical analysis and presentation skills to full effect. He was a valued member of the group.”

Peter Maurer

Colonel, Swiss Armed Forces, Head of TED at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre

“I had the privilege of getting to know Craig in 2018, in my capacity as the National Missions Director for African Enterprise. We became acquainted over several months while organising a public event aimed at racial reconciliation in the Saldanha Bay Municipality. I can testify to Craig’s commitment to empowering communities, his thoroughness, and attention to detail.”

Siphiwe Sibiya

Rector, St. Raphaels Anglican Church Diocese of Natal

“As a student twenty years ago, Craig impressed me with his determination to make this a better, more human-centered, world. He brings to this exciting new phase of his career the same determination: But nowadays it is informed by theory and tempered by experience.”

Peter Vale

Nelson Mandela Professor of Politics Emeritus, Rhodes University

CORNERSTONES

Leadership

Africa has tremendous potential. In addition to being rich in natural resources, the continent’s population – the fastest growing and youngest globally – is currently numbering close to 1.4 billion. Africa’s potential can be realised, but not without its people being empowered with the appropriate values, knowledge, skills, and a vision that motivates. Essential to such an endeavour is the appropriate leadership at every level and across all spheres of society. “Everything rises and falls on leadership.”

Followership

Effective leadership does not exist beyond willing, engaged followership. The nature of power relations between leaders and followers, governments and their citizens, has shaped the Africa of today and will shape the Africa of tomorrow. The cultural change that technological advances and globalisation have and continue to encourage means that power is no longer the domain of leaders alone. The likelihood of leadership that benefits the collective is enhanced to the degree that followers recognise and act upon their agency and potential for influence.

Courage

BLC takes a values-based approach to leadership, followership, and organisational change. This means we believe the best possible leader-follower relationship, corporate culture, or form of political governance, is founded on values that transcend time and place. So far as these values challenge the status quo, expressing them will require courage. “Courage is the most important of all virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” “Effective leaders must see themselves as change agents.” Change can be uncomfortable, often involving risk for those pushing for it. Therefore, leaders must have courage when pursuing necessary change while followers must have the courage to offer leaders the appropriate support and challenge leaders when necessary.

Craig Bailie

Founder and Director

WESTERN CAPE, RSA

Craig Bailie’s experience of authority during COVID-19 heightened his appreciation for the significance of organisational culture, values-based leadership, and the roles and responsibilities of followers. The Coronavirus pandemic made for a career-defining moment that led to his resignation from the South African Department of Defence and his founding of Bailie Leadership Consultancy (BLC).

Through BLC, Craig aims to bridge the theory-practice divide and leverage several assets at his disposal for the benefit of clients and communities who seek knowledge, improved organisational performance, and more fulfilled lives. These assets include his qualifications and teaching experience in political science, insights gained during a stint with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), ten-plus years of experience as a defence civilian, a well-established network of academics and practitioners, and his ongoing doctoral studies in strategic leadership (with a focus on global consulting).
